Monitoring local government meetings is a long-established practice of League of Women Voters. It is one approach to help inform citizens about current issues and their governments.

Observer Corps exists to foster transparency and accountability. Members of League's Observer Corps listen, learn and report factual information about proceedings in local municipal, school, library and township boards. Observers are monitoring both the issues being discussed as well as the process by which they are being discussed.

Observer Corps:  Empowering Democracy

The League of Women Voters Observer Corps, in the pursuit of transparent and accountable governance, civic engagement plays a pivotal role. The League of Women Voters Observer Corps stands at the forefront of this endeavor, exemplifying the power of citizen participation in the democratic process. The League of Women Voters (LWV) Observer Corps was established with a clear mission in mind: to promote an open and responsive government by observing local governmental meetings, actions, and decisions. Comprising dedicated individuals, the Observer Corps acts as the eyes and ears of the community, ensuring that governmental bodies operate with transparency and accountability. Our team members are trained in how to attend meetings and write subsequent reports as strictly neutral observers.

The Observer Corps has its roots in the early 20th century when the LWV was founded to empower women and enhance their role in public affairs. Over the years, the Corps has evolved to include both men and women who are committed to the principles of good governance.

The LWV Observer Corps stands as a shining example of how citizen-led initiatives can positively impact democracy. By upholding the values of transparency, accountability, and community engagement, the Observer Corps plays a vital role in ensuring that the wheels of democracy turn smoothly at the grassroots level. As we continue to navigate the complexities of governance, the Observer Corps remains an inspiring model for fostering an engaged and informed citizenry.
