Immigration is a key issue for the League of Women Voters at the national, state and local levels. Seeking asylum at points of entry into the United States is part of our legal immigration process. The League of Women Voters stands in solidarity with immigrants and those organizations in the immigrants rights communities.

Unaccompanied children who come to the United States seeking asylum are sent to federal government funded youth immigrant shelters while they await their asylum hearings. When they turn 18, if they have no family with whom they can live, they are sent to adult detention centers.

In our area, those centers are county jails.

Two of these immigration organizations are Viator House of Hospitality and Bethany House of Hospitality. These not for profits provide a home, and much more, for these young adults. We’ll hear stories from young adult immigrants as well as learn more about how the immigration process really works.
